Before You Sign: Questions to Ask About Deposits, Cancellations, and Extensions

Before you accept a rental agreement, make sure you understand what happens if the stay goes as planned and what happens if it changes. The monthly price answers only part of that question. Deposits, cancellation terms and extension arrangements can affect both your budget and your next move.

Use the questions below to identify the conditions that apply to your particular booking. Ask for clear written answers and keep them with the agreement. This checklist helps you prepare a conversation; it does not determine your legal rights or replace advice about a contract you do not understand.

First, check what you are agreeing to

Confirm that the agreement identifies the apartment, the relevant parties, the approved occupants and the exact dates. Read it alongside the quote and important messages. If the versions disagree, ask for the inconsistency to be resolved before treating either one as the final arrangement.

Clarify which documents contain the applicable conditions. A conversation can refer to a rule without explaining its full scope. If a separate policy is mentioned, request it and read it. Save a copy of the version you receive rather than relying only on a link that may later change. If you are considering BeTrusty, its rental process for newcomers offers a starting point for that conversation; the conditions for your particular apartment still need to be clear.

Questions about the deposit

A deposit needs its own explanation. Ask what it is for and how it is handled. Avoid assuming that the deposit terms at one apartment will match those at another, even if both are described as monthly rentals. For budgeting, the guide to the real cost of a monthly rental explains how to separate recurring charges from the deposit and cash needed before arrival.

  • Is a deposit required, and what is its amount and currency?
  • When is it due, and who receives or holds it?
  • What conditions apply to its return?
  • How would a proposed deduction be documented and communicated?
  • What checkout steps are expected from you?
  • When and by what method would any balance be returned?

If you will leave the country at the end of the stay, ask whether the proposed return method works for you. If you are moving to another rental, consider the time between paying its deposit and receiving any balance from the previous one. Do not count on money being available before the stated process is complete. You can use the rental cost calculator to sketch an illustrative budget, then record the deposit and its return conditions separately; the calculator does not determine refunds or penalties.

Questions about cancellation before arrival

Think through the possibility that you cannot travel, need different dates or decide not to proceed. Ask how the arrangement treats each situation. A date change is not necessarily handled in the same way as a cancellation, and a credit toward another stay is different from money returned to you.

Request a clear explanation of any deadlines and how notice must be given. Clarify which payments the cancellation conditions refer to, including rent paid in advance, fees and a deposit if one has already been paid. If an exception is mentioned, ask what it covers and who confirms it.

Do not rely on an informal “we will work something out” as your plan for a material change. Ask what is agreed now, what would require a later decision, and what would happen if an alternative apartment or date were unavailable. If you are still choosing a booking route, compare Airbnb and monthly furnished rentals and ask each provider which cancellation and date-change terms apply to your stay.

Questions about leaving earlier than planned

Your situation may change after you arrive. Before signing, ask what process applies if you want or need to leave before the agreed end date. Confirm the notice method, whom to contact and how the financial consequences would be explained.

Ask whether the quoted answer depends on the reason for leaving or the timing of the request. Do not treat a general cancellation message as a complete explanation of early departure. If the contract language and the explanation do not match, seek clarification before accepting the arrangement.

Contract terms do not by themselves settle every question about applicable law. If a clause is unclear or has significant consequences for you, obtain appropriate advice about that specific agreement.

Questions about extending the stay

An apartment that suits you for the first month may be somewhere you want to stay longer. Ask how an extension request works, while keeping it separate from a confirmed extension. Interest from you does not establish future availability or preserve the original price. Before requesting more time, revisit your practical needs with the internet and workspace apartment checklist, especially if you will be working from the apartment.

  • When should you ask about additional dates?
  • Who can confirm an extension?
  • Would the price, payment schedule or other conditions change?
  • Would the existing deposit remain in place or need another arrangement?
  • What written confirmation would show the new end date?
  • What is your alternative if the apartment is unavailable?

If you already expect to need a longer period, say so before booking. Comparing the terms for your likely dates may be more useful than planning to renegotiate immediately after arrival. If an extension is unavailable, explore monthly rental options in Buenos Aires for your next dates and compare their conditions before committing.

Turn the answers into a usable record

Make a short summary in your own words: amount due before arrival, deposit process, cancellation deadlines, early-departure procedure and extension contact. Check that the summary matches the documents. It is a memory aid, not a replacement for the agreement.

Keep unanswered points visible. The goal is not to collect a reassuring response to every question; it is to know what is confirmed, what is conditional and what you still need to decide. That makes an agreement easier to assess before a signature or payment commits you to it.
